To keep up with current events, you should read up on the latest news. Current news articles often include commentary and video clips. Breaking news is sometimes also referred to as late-breaking news, and it is used to describe a story that is happening live. It is also sometimes used to describe a story that is of high interest to many viewers but hasn’t yet been published by another news organization. However, there are some important distinctions between breaking news and current news.
When news is breaking, a national network’s main affiliates may join in the feed. A breaking news graphic, usually a video of the headline of an article, emphasizes the nature of the news. A story anchor may introduce the story, and the lower third may be changed or rearranged to emphasize the urgency of the news. The news director may also alter the language in the lower third to convey an impression of urgency. In the same way, a national network’s breaking news story ends with a disclaimer.
During prime time, breaking news can interrupt the broadcast of a television program, especially if it is in a highly rated show with a limited air time. A good example of this is the April 2017 episode of Scandal, which was interrupted by ABC’s Shayrat missile strike. Local news stations rarely offer this feature. This is an example of the aforementioned advantages of breaking news in television. While breaking news can disrupt otherwise popular programming, it can also interrupt a show with less air time.
