Breaking news is a term that describes a story that is live and of the utmost importance. Although it is used to describe stories that have widespread interest for viewers, it is generally used after a news organization has already reported on a story. The term “breaking news” is also sometimes interchangeably used with the word “special report,” “special coverage,” and “news flash.”
A breaking news report ends with a disclaimer indicating that more information is available from ABC. In many instances, the anchor may tell viewers that they can check the ABC website for more information on the breaking news story. However, the word “breaking news” is usually used together with “special report” in the case of breaking news broadcasts. For example, ABC’s breaking news ending includes the words “breaking news” and “special report.”
Breaking news can interrupt prime time programming. Even if it does not involve breaking news, it may interrupt highly-rated prime-time programs or shows with little remaining time. The April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted an episode of Scandal on ABC. The broadcaster may also give local stations a break in prime time when a special report is scheduled. Some networks have special topical graphics that accompany breaking news. This is especially important during times when local television stations may not be available for the event.
