Streaming news has changed the news business. As more people subscribe to streaming services, the major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. It’s an efficient way to deliver news, and it makes building news libraries economical.

Streaming news arrives on demand, and it travels wherever the viewer goes. In addition to offering timely news delivery, it allows viewers to customize their experience. Streaming also allows networks to archive content. This means that a news report can last hours or days. The network action depends on how long the coverage lasts. Syndicated programs may have segments not aired, and regular commercial advertising may be suspended to provide sustained coverage.

When a breaking news event occurs, the network may break from the current schedule. In some cases, coverage may be passed to a reporter at the site of the breaking news. Other times, the coverage may be shared with the network’s affiliates. These affiliates may join in progress, or they may be given the option to start a new newscast at the point of interruption.

In the past, broadcast news stations were limited by the news sources available and by the distance of the town crier. The newssheet was portable, sharable, and resembling a TV newscast.

When breaking news occurs during prime time, it may interrupt local newscasts. During this time, the network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor. However, as soon as the coverage is over, the network may switch to its regular schedule.
