Often, a television network will begin a program or a segment by saying, “I’ll start with a special report.” This is known as breaking news. It can refer to either a live story or a story from a previous time period. It is also used to refer to events that are important to many people.

Breaking news coverage is usually provided by a television network reporter or newscaster. In some cases, a reporter may be on the scene of the event. It is also possible that the network’s internal alert service will disseminate the information to local stations. In some cases, networks will send the information to all of their affiliates.

The network may pause during the breaking news for a few seconds, and then resume the previous program or segment. If a program extends beyond 20 or 45 minutes, it may be rescheduled. Sometimes, an anchor will say, “The special report will be back in a few minutes.”

If there is a live shot of an anchor or a reporter, the network may continue to use the live shot. The anchor may say, “The full wrap-up will be on your local news.” In some cases, the anchor may say, “The special report is just in.”

The breaking news theme on radio is generally very urgent. The tenor of the music and lower thirds may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. A radio station is also careful about relaying the stories during play-by-play broadcasts of professional sports.
