Historically, television news has stayed on the airwaves, but new video streaming technologies are changing the way that news is delivered. These services are likely to reshape news coverage, especially political news, and could attract new, overtly political news operations.

Streaming news is arriving on demand, on the viewer’s terms. This reduces the scarcity factor in the media equation and allows for timely delivery of information. Streaming news has a proven track record of drawing niche audiences. Streaming networks are repurposing programming from broadcast and cable to attract new viewers.

Streaming networks also offer news analysis. The networks invest hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. This makes it economical to build a news library. They also allow networks to archive their content. This allows viewers to view the news wherever they go.

In the event of a breaking news story, a national network newscast will stop to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. The local station may cut away to video of the story, and the network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor. This may be used to convey a sense of urgency.

A breaking news anchor will introduce the story, usually with a music score. It will also usually include a disclaimer that more information will be available on the local station.

A breaking news story may be interrupted during prime time, and the network will resume previous programming when the coverage is over. Local stations will typically choose to air their own newscasts, and they may have the option to begin their evening newscasts instead.
