Streaming news has proved to be a powerful force for mass audiences. Streaming allows viewers to watch news wherever and whenever they want. This is why major news networks have high hopes for online video streaming.
Streaming has proven to be a great way for news networks to archive and deliver content to an audience. In addition, it has also been proven to attract a niche audience. For example, the popular NBC News Now has 31 million hours of content per month. It also has an aggressive local streaming news strategy.
A recent study showed that Americans watched more streaming programming than broadcast TV. The three major news networks (CNN, Fox, and MSNBC) combined earned a profit of $3 billion in 2020. That’s a far cry from the $1 billion in profits that cable news networks earned in 2000.
It’s likely that online video streaming will reshape political news coverage. It may also attract new overtly political news operations.
As with any new technology, there are concerns that streaming could exacerbate the polarization of our political landscape. Streaming could also create siloing results similar to cable TV.
The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into streaming operations. But they’ve also been careful not to overhype the technology. They’ve also avoided building new free news outlets. In the past, they’ve tried to buy the Cable News Network.
CNN spawned MSNBC. It also spawned Fox News Channel. However, the free news streamers are mimicking cable’s approach.
