Whether you’re a TV or radio watcher, you may have heard of the term “breaking news”. The term is sometimes interchanged with “late-breaking news” and “just in.” Often, breaking news refers to a live story.
Whether it’s a local event or a global story, breaking news can affect your day. It may interrupt your morning or evening newscast or an overnight news program. Depending on the length of coverage, the network may switch back to your normal programming or start another show.
Typically, a breaking news story is short and may last for a few minutes. It’s also sometimes referred to as a “special report.” This type of news is often passed to a reporter at the location of the breaking news. This reporter may share additional information as the story breaks.
During prime time, breaking news can interrupt an overnight news program or interrupt the local newscast. If the news story is important, the local station may take advantage of the time and switch to a special “extended edition” or join the network feed for a few minutes. Alternatively, the station may cut away to a video of the story and remind viewers that a full wrap-up will be shown on the local news.
When a breaking news story interrupts local or network programming, the news is typically disseminated through an internal alert service or station master control. The local station may also be given a cue from the network talent. If the news is too urgent to wait for the local news, the program may be rescheduled.
