During prime time, breaking news can interrupt programming. Depending on the length of the coverage, the network may pause or restart previous programming. In some cases, local stations are given a chance to break away from the network feed and air their own programs.

A breaking news report can last as long as several hours. News stations often use the term “breaking news” to refer to stories that are important and of interest to a large number of viewers.

A breaking news report is usually the most important story of the day. It may be announced by a live anchor, or a reporter may be dispatched to the location of the breaking news. As the news breaks, the reporter may share additional information. This information may be distributed by the station master control and disseminated by the network’s internal alert service.

In prime time, breaking news can also interrupt a local newscast. For example, ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted a new episode of Scandal. The show’s anchors reminded viewers that a full wrap-up would air on local news.

While the news is being covered, the network may pause to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. When the coverage is over, the network may return to its regular programming schedule. This can be done either through a reverse countdown or by re-rolling the opening graphic.

In the case of a breaking news report, a reverse countdown is usually a five-second countdown. The network may continue to show the live shot of the anchor while the rest of the program is being updated. The news may also be cut away to a video of the story.
