When a breaking news event occurs that requires an interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, currently airing news), a network will alert all of its affiliate stations to stand by. Usually, there will be a countdown to allow affiliates to switch over to the network feed. A special report (“Newsflash” or “Special Report”) will then be aired to cover the developing story.
