When an event occurs that is so important or urgent that it warrants breaking news coverage on a national level and requires that other, non-breaking stories be interrupted, the network will typically interrupt regular programming with a special break. This is called a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. When this happens, all network affiliate stations are told to “stand by” to switch to the network feed and to wait for an opening graphic and distinctive music cue, which will then begin the breaking news reporting. Often, lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey urgency.
