Trending is a segment that covers topics that are currently generating a lot of interest on social media. The segment is generally accompanied by an image or graphic that explains the topic and provides a link to additional information on it. If the event is serious enough to require an interruption in regular programming, a news anchor is usually introduced and the station’s identification (usually with a countdown sequence) appears overlaid at the top of the screen. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, this kind of break was typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
