Trending is a term used to refer to topics or events that are popular and/or getting a lot of attention on the social media. Usually, these trends are derived from popular search terms or based on current news. The trend is shown through a graphic that is overlayed on the top of the website or the app. Generally, the graphic also includes the word “Trending” in bold font and a trending topic in blue text. The trending topic is updated as needed. Breaking news is a type of report about a developing story. It requires interrupting current non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, a pause to allow station affiliates to switch to the network feed). Historically, breaking news was only interrupted for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, but 24-hour news networks have since adopted the use of “Newsflash” and “Special Report” tickers to lessen the need for cut-ins.
