When a news event occurs that is urgent enough to warrant interrupting regular non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, their regularly scheduled newscasts) and providing live coverage, it’s called breaking news. Typically, stations will issue an alert to their affiliates asking them to stand by for an upcoming break in the program. A countdown to the break will usually be displayed as well, to allow affiliates time to change their station imaging promos and program reminders to a “special report” version. Breaking news may be announced with a special graphic, and some networks have started using a special ticker during regular programming to reduce the need for these interruptions. This article also includes information about the different kinds of breaking news stories.
