In North America, breaking news is often reported on radio and television broadcasters; however, it may also be covered in print media (especially in newspapers and magazines), online and by podcasts. The coverage of breaking news may last for minutes, hours or days, and can be augmented by integrating analysis through in-studio, phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means of communication.

Typically, a breaking news story begins with an opening graphic (or an alert crawl, for radio stations) that announces the story and introduces a news anchor. The opening is followed by a series of bulletins or other brief graphics that relay the news.

While this coverage is being presented, the news anchor usually reminds viewers that the story will be more extensively covered in a later episode of their late local newscast and a full wrap-up on their network’s overnight news program (if applicable). This type of coverage can also be repeated on sister stations or digital subchannels for local programming pre-empted by a breaking news report.

A breaking news story is the latest event involving news or information that warrants a live newscast interruption. This may include the death of a notable person, a large scale disaster or an event that is of immediate interest to the audience. For example, the recent Sago Mine disaster was a major breaking news story.
