While cable and satellite television have been the traditional outlets for television news, the emergence of streaming services has shifted the audience’s preferences and has resulted in a new trend for current news. With more than 85 percent of American households subscribed to at least one streaming service, current news networks are seeing their audiences shrink. And the reason: many of these newcomers are under 45. The younger demographics have become the most important audience for mainstream news outlets.
While the streaming format is a new frontier for TV news, many major networks have high hopes for its potential. Even Fox, which owns multiple cable news channels, has invested millions of dollars in streaming. Its Fox Nation streaming service has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. NBC News Now boasts 31 million video views per month, and it claims to produce 10 hours of programming a day. Streaming is a hot topic among news executives, but the debate about its viability lingers on.
