Breaking news is a television or radio news story that is so important and urgent that it necessitates an immediate interruption of regular programming to report the event. Often, breaking news events are preceded by an alert in the form of an audio clip or lower third graphics with a distinctive music cue. The newscast may then pause or end with a countdown sequence, to allow network affiliates to switch to the network feed for live coverage. In the past, such breaks were reserved for events that elicited nationwide coverage or required numerous stations to interrupt their own programs.
