Breaking news is a term used by television and radio broadcasters to indicate that an event of urgent national importance has occurred, and that the network is interrupting current non-news programming or, in the case of the most pressing events, a regularly scheduled newscast to report on it. When this occurs, a network feed opens with a countdown sequence, followed by a graphic and distinctive music cue, alerting the station affiliates to switch over to the breaking news report. Depending on the story, lower thirds or other graphics may be overlaid to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news reports are also known as Newsflash, Newsbreak or Special Report.
