Trending is a series of short news stories that are currently being discussed on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. These stories are selected by the Trending algorithm based on their relevance and popularity. When a story becomes particularly popular, it will be promoted on the Trending page of the website and may also be included in other news stories that are being published on the site. Trending is similar to the concept of Breaking News, though breaking news typically involves an urgent event that elicits national coverage and requires stations to interrupt regular programming or network newscasts (or in the case of a live, nationally-broadcast newscast, the countdown to the special report). “Newsflash” and “Special Report” are also synonyms for this type of reporting.
