Streaming news has proven to attract niche audiences. This new form of delivery is able to serve viewers anywhere, anytime. It’s a technological leap forward for television news.
As a result, major networks have entered the news streaming space. These include CBS, ABC, and Fox. Each plans to beam more than 45,000 hours of local news coverage in 2022. The networks will also repurpose their broadcast programming for streaming.
The success of the Fox News Channel and its app is evidence that viewers are willing to pay for content. Streaming could also help the cable networks to reach a wider audience.
Streaming will likely reshape political news coverage. Online video will not be bound by TV licenses, and it will allow overtly political news operations to enter the market.
Free news streamers have been promising viewers that they can cut their cable subscriptions and still receive the same cable quality of news. In fact, the free services resemble cable’s style.
Despite this, major news networks are optimistic that streaming will help them reach new audiences. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. Streaming allows them to archive their programming. This makes building their news libraries economical.
Streaming also allows for time-shifting. For instance, viewers can watch their local CBS affiliate’s coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse. Or, they can watch a local Sacramento shooting report.
Whether streaming will prove to be a commercial success is still up in the air. However, the success of Fox Nation and other new online news services suggests that television audiences will pay.
