Trending is a breaking news segment on current television shows, that talks about the latest trends in social media, technology and culture. It is usually aired in the prime time slots on major TV channels. This type of segment is similar to the Newsflash or Special report, but with the use of lower third graphics and distinctive music cues. The use of these segments was previously reserved for major, nationally resonant events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and severe weather events that prompted station cut-ins to regular programming (and in some cases, a live newscast). Breaking news segments are also common on 24-hour cable and satellite networks.
