Breaking news is a term used by television and radio stations to signify an urgent story which requires the interruption of regular non-news programming (or in some cases, of a regularly scheduled network newscast) for coverage. During breaking news events, a network will usually alert its affiliates to the impending interruption, and display a countdown sequence. A special graphic, often with a distinctive music cue, is then introduced to the screen along with a special ticker to notify viewers of the story being covered. The term is also commonly used at 24-hour news networks, which have anchors on standby to interrupt programming as needed.
