Trending is a term used in broadcast television and radio to denote breaking news events, particularly severe weather or other situations that warrant immediate coverage. A broadcaster will interrupt current non-news or regularly scheduled programs (such as a network newscast) to break the news event, and will often begin with a countdown sequence and/or a special graphic, with a distinctive music cue. This is known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” in the United States and Canada, while similar graphics and other identifiers are typically used in Europe. Breaking news typically interrupts the regular programming of a national or local news network for several minutes, or may even halt live newscasts.
