Breaking news is the name for events that require a television or radio station to interrupt current non-news programming, or in some cases regularly scheduled network newscasts, to provide live reporting on them. The station may use a graphic and music cue to signal the change in programming, or simply pause it. If the event warrants the interruption of a national newscast, it may also use a countdown sequence to give affiliate stations time to switch over to the network feed. The use of breaking news graphic and music cues is a long-standing tradition in broadcasting, but has become even more common with the advent of 24-hour news networks that are prepared to interrupt their regular programming for live coverage at any time. In recent years, some networks have introduced “Newsflash” and “Special report” tickers to interrupt programs on an individual basis without the need for cut-ins or alert crawls.
