The term “breaking news” is used to describe various types of news. It is also used to describe live stories and is sometimes interchangeable with “late-breaking news” and “special coverage.” The term is typically used to describe the most important story of the moment, and may be used in the context of news about a specific event that is currently unfolding. Although it is a common way to refer to a story that is happening right now, not all viewers recognize the term as being significant.
Depending on the network, a breaking news anchor will interrupt a local newscast to alert viewers of the story. A network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor, while a local television station might cut away and air a video of the story. During breaking news events, however, the coverage will be passed to a reporter on the scene, who can provide additional details as they become available. However, these anchors may also remind viewers to check the network website for more information, or to watch local cable news channels for more.
Breaking news during prime time may also disrupt a program or episode. It can also interrupt a new episode of a show or a highly-rated program that still has time to air. In April 2017, an episode of ABC’s Scandal was interrupted by the launch of a missile. Whether a local television station decides to break away from the network feed or join the “extended edition” is up to them. While the broadcast networks are often very accommodating to breaking news, local news stations should still consider these points when deciding on their schedule and content.
