Historically, broadcast news has been profitable. But cable TV one-upped the competition with live events. And now, online video streaming could reshape the way news is covered.
Streaming news has been around for ten years. Major streaming networks repurpose cable programming. They offer documentaries, reruns, and news analysis. During prime time, breaking news can interrupt programming. When the coverage ends, the network may switch back to the newscast. But if the coverage is extensive, the network may suspend regular commercial advertising.
For example, during April’s Shayrat missile strike, the new episode of ABC’s Scandal was interrupted. The network aired a special report that included a disclaimer that more details would be available on local news.
The network may also resume previous programming when coverage ends. It may continue to show a live shot of the anchor. It may also change the lower thirds to reflect a sense of urgency.
Breaking news is the most important story of the moment. It can be a live event, or an old story that is important to many people. It can last hours, days, or weeks.
During prime time, breaking news can interrupt local newscasts. The anchor will introduce the story and ask the viewer to continue watching for more details. The station may offer a breakaway to the video of the story, or it may cut to the station’s website or other platforms.
The news anchor also provides background information about the story. The reporter at the location of the breaking event may also give more information. This information is then disseminated through the broadcaster’s internal alert system.
