Breaking news is the term for an event in television and radio news reporting that warrants a temporary interruption of non-news programming, or, in the case of network newscasts, regular broadcasts. The breaking news event may require a full-time or extended break in coverage, and may include special graphics on-screen to convey urgency. A network will typically alert affiliates to stand by and pause their current non-news programming, and then provide a feed for any affiliate stations to join the break, often with a countdown graphic and a distinctive news anchor introduction and music cue. The breaking news will be followed by a news anchor and commentary or analysis of the story, which is then overlaid on top of the station’s normal program listing, reducing the need for traditional cut-ins.
