Trending is a feature that allows you to quickly see what news stories are currently most popular on Current News. It is based on the number of views received by news stories, which are aggregated across all platforms (website, app, and TV). The article that is most popular will be displayed at the top of the page in Trending. The trending article is updated regularly.
Breaking news is news that warrants the interruption of normal non-news programming on television or radio for live reporting and commentary. Before 24-hour news networks became common, such breaks were usually reserved for extremely urgent events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Today, breaking news is frequently announced on a network’s regular non-news programming, typically through a countdown sequence that tells affiliated stations to stand by for an interrupt. It is also often accompanied by a special graphics package and distinctive music cues, such as the CBS News logo used for breaking news on the day of the assassination, or “Newsflash” and “Special report” in the case of an event that requires multiple stations to interrupt their respective regular programming.
