TV news has lived on the airwaves for decades. It’s a profitable business. The networks that own the channels have been investing hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.

Aside from the financial rewards, the technological advantage of streamers is that they can archive content. This makes it possible for a network to repurpose programming for a new audience. In fact, the major streaming networks already repurpose content from cable for their own programs.

Streaming has proven to be a popular alternative to broadcast TV. Many viewers spend more time watching streams than they do on broadcast TV. Moreover, the proliferation of different choices has helped feed an audience polarized by politics and media.

As a result, free news streamers are trying to lure consumers into cutting their cable subscriptions. Their approach is similar to the cable news model, with the added benefit of promoting cable-quality news. However, the competition is fierce.

For example, Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. Meanwhile, CBS News has aggressively pursued local streaming coverage. They’ve picked up coverage of Sacramento shootings, Pittsburgh bridge collapses, and the Grammys.

Streaming isn’t new; it’s been around for over ten years. However, the major networks now have high hopes for it.

The news networks have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on streaming. The major streaming networks offer documentaries, news analysis, and reruns. They also schedule regular nightly news programs. Some even plan on beaming 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
