Breaking news is news that is of such urgent importance that it requires the interruption of regular programming for extended coverage. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of report was typically restricted to major events requiring nationwide attention such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which necessitated many stations to interrupt regular non-news programming and use special tickers to alert the public to the event. When breaking news occurs during a national network newscast, the broadcaster usually starts by displaying an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue. Then, the network feed pauses to allow affiliates to switch over to the feed and begin their own local coverage.
