A breaking news event is a piece of information that elicits nationwide coverage, warranting the interruption of current non-news programming. In the days before 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were rare; a “Newsflash” or special report would be shown in place of a regular program when a story elicited such broad coverage that multiple stations needed to interrupt their schedules. Today, networks may insert such reports into regularly scheduled programming, or provide a break in the middle of a program, using a countdown sequence to give network affiliates time to switch over to the feed. A special graphic is used, and the usual station imaging promo or program reminder may be overlaid to give the broadcast a unique look.
NBC’s Hallie Jackson visits Jeffrey Epstein’s Zorro Ranch in New Mexico to shed light on the recent developments involving the disgraced former porn star. She also looks at how LGBTQ immigrants in Boston can afford wellness services like yoga and haircuts through a special allowance given to them by a local advocacy group. Plus, a convicted felon who is now a police officer in Oregon says he didn’t know he was armed when he opened fire.
