A breaking news event is an urgent news story that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, a live regularly scheduled network newscast). Breaking news typically starts with a countdown sequence for the networks’ affiliates to join the national feed and then begins with an opening graphic overlaid on top of a regular program and often accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Previously, breaking news events were interrupted through cut-ins and alert crawls during regular programs; however, this type of interruption has since been reduced with the rise of 24-hour news channels. Other terms used include Newsflash and Special Report.
