Current News (also called breaking news) is a form of programming interruption or pre-emption that interrupts broadcast television and radio’s regular schedule in order to cover an important news story. While the term is often used for the most significant news of the moment, it may also be assigned to smaller stories that have little impact on the wider world.

Depending on the story, the coverage may be continuous or interrupted for short periods of time, or it may last for hours or days. It can include live coverage of the event by an anchor or a reporter, as well as analysis and news bulletins incorporating in-studio reporters, phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) and other methods of communication.

On broadcast television, the coverage usually starts with an opening graphic accompanied by an urgent musical score. It is then introduced by a news anchor and continues with a brief introduction to the story at hand.

The most common form of this coverage is when a national network newscast interrupts its normal programming to cover a breaking news event. During such a time, the network’s feed pauses to allow other affiliated stations to join in the newscast.

A brief countdown is then displayed to allow affiliates to re-connect to the network’s feed. During this time, lower thirds and graphics may be altered to communicate the importance of the breaking news story.

When the news event is over, the story is usually re-emphasised with an outro that includes a promo for more details on the story and, if available, more details on local news that day or, if applicable, a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning news program.
