A breaking news story is an event that warrants interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) for live reporting. Breaking news is typically announced with a distinctive open, often accompanied by a unique music cue and/or a scrolling lower third graphic. A news anchor then appears on-air to break the news. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were reserved for particularly serious or urgent events such as natural disasters, wars and major political events like the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Often, the breaking news report will continue for several hours or days.
