This article describes the different terminology used in the current news world. Breaking news, late breaking news, special coverage, and news flash are terms that describe the biggest story of the moment, or live story. Breaking news can also refer to a story that has broad interest for viewers, but is only reported on after a news organization has reported on it. “Just In” is also used sometimes instead of “breaking news.”

Some breaking news events can be so major that the network may preempt local programs for a short period of time. For example, a presidential election can preempt local newscasts for a few days, and a missile strike in the Middle East can interrupt a highly-rated show with minutes or even hours to air. In such cases, the local station will be notified ahead of time of future interruptions. In addition to breaking news, local stations can also produce special topical graphics for events related to their communities.

If a national event is breaking, local stations may cut away to show the anchor’s live shot. Then, the network will return to its main programming and the local station may switch back to its current newscast. In other cases, the network will pass the coverage to a reporter at the scene of the breaking event. Those reporters are there to provide more information and report on the breaking news as it develops. And if local news reports are unavailable, viewers may need to check local cable news channels.
