A breaking news story is a broadcast event that warrants an interruption in non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, regular broadcast advertising). These events are usually followed by a special report from the network anchor or some other member of the news staff. In the past, these breaks were reserved for events of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted many local stations to interrupt their normal programming in order to air live coverage.
