Newsflash or Special Report are terms used on television to indicate an urgent breaking news story that requires the interruption of normal non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, regularly scheduled breaking news coverage). A countdown sequence may be displayed if the event is deemed so important that it warrants the network interrupting its affiliates. This countdown is often accompanied by a distinctive, specially created graphic and music cue to convey the urgency of the news item. During this break in the program, lower thirds will typically be updated to include the relevant information. In some cases, an alert crawl will also be added to the bottom of the screen.
