Judge Charlaine Olmedo said “at this time, I find the jury hopelessly deadlocked.”
Often, the term “current news” is used interchangeably with “breaking news.” The difference is simple: breaking news refers to a live story, whereas current news describes a story that has already been reported.
Breaking news is usually used to describe the most important story of the moment. It may describe a story of a local or national interest, or it may describe an event that has not yet been reported.
Breaking news can interrupt a local or network newscast. In some cases, a local station may be given the option to break away from the network feed and report the news independently. However, it is not uncommon for the station to return to the network feed once coverage ends.
Breaking news can also occur during a local newscast’s prime time. For example, in April 2017, ABC’s “Scandal” was interrupted by a missile strike from the Shayrat missile base in Iran.
The network may continue to show the live shot of the anchor while they discuss the breaking news. Then, the anchor may remind viewers that they will have more details on local news. The network may also integrate its analysis of the story.
Sometimes, the network may switch to a reverse countdown. This is often done from five seconds or less. Usually, a graphic is used, such as a music track, to emphasize the importance of the story. Depending on the length of coverage, the network may stop regular commercial advertising or suspend it completely.
