When an event occurs that is deemed so newsworthy that it warrants interruption of regular non-news programming, or even a live network newscast, a breaking news graphic is usually displayed with a distinctive music cue to signal the change. Sometimes the network will alert its affiliates to stand by before the break, and once the break is in progress, a countdown sequence will appear on-screen to allow affiliated stations to switch over to the network feed. This method of reporting is also known as Newsflash or Special report. It is common on 24-hour news networks.
