When a story develops that is deemed to be so important and urgent that it warrants interruption of current non-news programming, or even an interrupt of a national network newscast (particularly when the news event affects a large area that requires multiple stations to cover), the network will usually alert its affiliates with a countdown sequence and ask them to stand by. After a brief delay, the network will then begin its breaking news coverage with an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue. This is often called a Newsflash or Special Report. Previously, these types of cut-ins were limited to extremely severe or emergency situations, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
