Streaming news has become a popular option among viewers. It allows them to choose the content they want to watch, and it delivers news where and when they want it. Streaming networks are chasing breaking news, and they’re repurposing programming that was on broadcast or cable.

During the early years of streaming, the major networks had high hopes for streaming news. They invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the technology. And they have high hopes for the future.

Streaming networks offer news analysis, documentaries, and nightly news programs. Each network offers regular programming, but the major streaming networks also have special editions. This type of programming can be repurposed and re-aired on different days.

For example, a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh piped coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse to streamers. The network paused to allow other network affiliates to join the feed.

This type of coverage is common during political events, such as elections and candidate debates. Network talent may pause to give local stations a chance to break away from the network feed. In turn, the local station may begin its own evening newscast.

During coverage, anchors may remind viewers that more details will be covered in their local news. The network may also use a “special report” format, which commonly includes an internal alert service.

This type of coverage can last a few minutes, or multiple hours. It can also be interrupted during prime time to allow the network to refocus on other programming.
