Trending is a segment of Current News that talks about the things that are popular on social media. It usually features the most shared stories on Twitter and Facebook. The segment is hosted by a newscaster or reporter who provides analysis on the topic. If the trending story is particularly newsworthy, it may be interrupted in a similar way to breaking news events. Before the advent of 24-hour television news networks, such interruptions were rare and generally reserved for the most urgent and significant news events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
