About Trending
Breaking news is an urgent news event that requires a broadcaster to interrupt current non-news programming, or in some cases a network’s regular scheduled newscast. It is similar to a newsflash or special report and may be accompanied by an audio alert and/or a lower third graphic that indicates the story being reported. Breaking news events are often followed by analysis from a panel of analysts on-site or via satellite, phone, broadband (B-GAN) and/or in-studio. A breaking news segment may last only minutes, or multiple hours or days, depending on the topic.
Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, breaking news reports were normally limited to major events that demanded nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
