When an event occurs that demands immediate and widespread coverage, breaking news is reported through national network affiliates. This is usually done by interrupting non-news programming with a scrolling ticker or “Newsflash” graphic and music cue, and may continue for a period of time that could last minutes, hours, or even days. In the past, interruptions of regular programming were reserved for extremely serious events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, but now they are much more common at 24-hour news networks.
