Breaking news is a term used to describe an event that requires immediate nationwide coverage, or that has caused a significant interruption in regular television and radio programming. During breaking news, stations typically interrupt their regularly scheduled non-news programming with a “Newsflash” or “Special report” ticker, and may also change lower thirds and other graphics to convey a sense of urgency. Before 24-hour news networks became commonplace, such interruptions were limited to extremely urgent or emergency events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, requiring multiple network affiliates to interrupt their programming.
