Trending is the place to keep up with the latest stories, videos, photos and more. It’s where you can find the news that matters most to you.
Generally, a breaking news event is an urgent situation that demands immediate coverage. If a national network newscast is in progress at the time of a breaking story, it will usually pause for a short period, and a countdown sequence will begin to alert local affiliates that the program will be interrupted for an important news item. The newscast will then break to the special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic, and a news anchor will introduce the item at hand.
A break in regular commercial programming may occur for a few minutes or several hours, or in extreme cases, a station’s regular schedule may be completely suspended. During the time that breaking news events are being covered, lower thirds and other graphics will often be altered to convey the sense of urgency. In the days before 24-hour news channels, interrupting regular programming was only used for extremely serious situations, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
