Breaking news is a news event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular network newscasts) to deliver the news. A breaking news report often begins with a countdown sequence from the network to allow affiliates to switch to the feed, followed by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, interruptions were only used for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, requiring many stations to interrupt their programming simultaneously. Breaking news reports may also be referred to as a Newsflash or Special report.
