When a significant event happens that requires non-news programming or, at times, regularly scheduled newscasts to be interrupted, it is called Breaking News. The broadcaster will usually alert its affiliates to stand by and halt the normal program with a countdown sequence, or simply pause the network feed. Then a graphic, often with distinctive music cues or lower thirds, will be shown over the top of the screen to convey a sense of urgency. Alternatively, breaking news can be presented as a ticker during regular programming (also known as Newsflash or Special Report), lessening the need for cut-ins.
