Current News
Trending is a type of breaking news coverage on television and radio, as well as online. This coverage can include a range of stories, ranging from national and international news to local and regional issues.
Depending on the magnitude of the event, breaking news may be provided in real-time or via cut-ins to video and audio from a live reporter at the scene. The format of a breaking news story typically consists of an opening graphic, usually with music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”), that conveys the importance of the story.
The anchor may announce the story, and lower thirds may be re-formatted to convey a sense of urgency. In addition, a brief disclaimer is added at the end of the broadcast to let viewers know that there will be more details on their local newscast or on the network’s evening news program the following morning.
In addition to the special report, some networks also pre-empt programming for other breaking news reports; this may be done in advance or on the fly. This is particularly true in the case of political speeches and other highly anticipated events, such as presidential debates and elections.
In the United States, both Fox News Channel and CNN have de-emphasized the term “special report” from their titles to emphasize breaking news. However, “special report” is still used on some cable channels for regular programming such as Fox’s weekly political affairs show with Bret Baier and CNN’s library documentary and true crime programming.
