When an event occurs that warrants interrupting non-news programming on a television or radio station, the broadcaster usually alerts its network affiliates to “stand by” as it prepares to cut in. The station’s news anchor then introduces the breaking news story. Often, a special ticker will appear on-screen during the news report, and lower thirds or other graphics are altered to convey urgency. Depending on the event, break-ins may be brief or continue for an extended period of time, sometimes interrupted with regular commercial advertising or even suspended entirely to provide sustained coverage.
