Authorities in Canada confirm that a Canadian citizen who was on the cruise ship has tested positive for hantavirus. Meanwhile, a rare strain of the Ebola virus is now declared a global emergency.

A news event or series of events that a major network is covering during their regularly scheduled program. These breaks in programming can also be called “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” Usually, a special graphic and distinctive music cue is used to announce the interruption. Often, the newsflash will be accompanied by a countdown to allow affiliates to switch to the national feed in time for the breaking story. During the break, a network news anchor or reporter will appear on-air and cover the story. Depending on the nature of the breaking story, the newscast may continue for several hours or days. The same technique is sometimes used for a local news story that elicits nationwide coverage and would require numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming.
